30th January 1991
George Graham was aggrieved that Arsenal hadn’t progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup at the first time of asking. Paul Davis had what seemed a perfectly good goal disallowed towards the end of the fourth round tie at Highbury.
Three days later, we convened at Elland Road for the first replay. Think about that for a second. Three days. Now we can’t have a cup replay for ten days because of the time it takes to organise these things.
What changed and when? Why did anyone think that the staging of a replay suddenly became more complex than before? I can’t immediately recall when the football calendar changed but replays have become a dirty word in football more’s the pity.
